A59 maintenance and improvement scheme

North Yorkshire County Councilis to carry out three highway projects along the A59 in conjunction with the highway works being undertaken by City of York Council at Hessay. The works will begin on Monday 1 March 2010 with completion due by Friday 2 April 2010.

The major project involves reconstruction of one kilometre of the A59 between Kirk Hammerton and Skipbridge to replace the worn-out road surface. At the same time, the A59 will be widened at the junction with Pool Lane, which is the only access route to the village of Nun Monkton. This is to enable safer right-turn manoeuvres at this junction and into nearby premises as it has a significant accident history.

North Yorkshire County Council is also taking this opportunity to undertake pedestrian refuge improvements overnight at the junction of York Road, Green Hammerton and signing and lining improvements will also be carried out at Whixley crossroads on the A59.

City of York Council will be carrying out surfacing works on the A59 at Hessay during this same time period under a series of night-time closures between 9pm and 6am, Monday to Friday.

The North Yorkshire County Council works will be carried out at a variety of times, including off-peak day-working under traffic lights and night-working, with a full weekend closure from Friday 26 March 2010 to Sunday 28 March 2010. The diversionary route for the closure is via the A64 and the A1. Local diversions to the villages within the extents of the works will be signposted.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Any businesses and residents requiring specific access arrangements should contact the contractor’s representative of Houseman and Falshaw Ltd, Dave Marston (Site Agent), on 01423 340000 or 07773 340870.

As with any construction and improvement work there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience. North Yorkshire County Council is working closely with the contractor and City of York Council to ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible and with as least disruption to the travelling public.

For any general enquiries regarding these works, please contact North Yorkshire County Council on 0845 8 72 73 74.
